Thomas Barnwall Martin (born 1784 – died April 1847) was an Irish landowner and a politician. He was known for his efforts to help his tenants during a difficult time in Ireland.

Thomas was the oldest son of Richard Martin, who was also a politician and known for his humanitarian work. Thomas's mother was Elizabeth Vesey. When he was young, Thomas left home to join the army.

A Soldier's Life

Thomas Martin served as a soldier in Spain. He was part of the Siege of Badajoz (1812) in 1812. During this battle, he was seriously injured. His bravery was even noticed by the famous military leader, the Duke of Wellington, who praised him personally.

Return to Ireland and Politics

After his time in the army, Thomas returned to Ireland. He later got married and took over his family's large estate. This estate was located around Ballynahinch Castle in an area called Connemara.

Following in his father's footsteps, Thomas successfully ran for a seat in Parliament. He was elected in 1832 and served as a Member of Parliament for Galway County until he passed away.

Helping His People

Thomas Martin died in April 1847. He became ill with what was called "famine fever," which he caught while trying to help the people who lived on his land. These people were suffering greatly from the effects of a terrible famine. His last words showed how much he cared for them: "My God! What will become of my people?"

Family Life

Thomas Martin was married to Julia Kirwan. She was the daughter of Patrick Kirwan of Dalgan Park. They had one daughter named Mary Letitia Martin. Mary Letitia later became an author and married Arthur G. Bell. She passed away on October 30, 1850.
