Thomas Clement Thompson (1780 – 11 February 1857) was an Irish artist. He was also one of the people who helped start the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Thomas Clement Thompson was a talented painter from Ireland. He was born in Belfast in 1780. He became well-known for painting portraits of important people.

Early Life and Training

When he was young, Thomas Thompson studied art at the Dublin Society Schools. This was in 1796. After his training, he started his career in Belfast and Dublin. At first, he focused on painting portrait miniatures. These are very small, detailed portraits.

From Miniatures to Big Portraits

Between 1803 and 1809, Thompson decided to change his style. He started to focus on painting much larger portraits. He also painted some landscapes, which are pictures of nature. His studio in Dublin became very successful.

A Painter in London

Around 1817, Thompson moved his studio to London. He began showing his artwork at the Royal Academy. This is a very famous art institution. He showed his paintings there often until 1847. He was also chosen as one of the first members of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He sometimes showed his art there between 1826 and 1852.

Important Works and Legacy

Thomas Thompson painted many important people during his career. One of his famous subjects was George IV, who was the King of the United Kingdom. He also painted many other people from important families and politics. His work helped capture the look of society during his time.

Later Life and Passing

In 1848, Thompson moved from London to Cheltenham. He lived there until he passed away. Thomas Clement Thompson died on 11 February 1857. He was around 78 or 79 years old.
