Who Was Thomas Cromwell?
Thomas Cromwell was born on June 11, 1594. He was the oldest son of Edward Cromwell and Frances Rugge. He had two younger sisters, Frances and Anne. He also had an older half-sister named Elizabeth from his father's first marriage.
Thomas Cromwell's Life and Work
Thomas Cromwell's father, Edward, faced financial problems. He had to trade his family's lands in England for new lands in Ulster, Ireland. These lands had been taken by the government after a big conflict called Tyrone's Rebellion. So, the family moved to Ireland.
When his father died in 1607, Thomas became the 4th Baron Cromwell. A "Baron" is a title of nobility. Later, in 1624, he was given another title: 1st Viscount Lecale. These titles were part of the "Peerage," which means a system of noble ranks.
Supporting the King
Thomas Cromwell was a strong supporter of Charles I of England, the King, during a difficult time in history. This period was known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. These wars were a series of conflicts across England, Scotland, and Ireland.
In 1640, Thomas became a "Colonel" and led a group of soldiers called Lord Cromwell's Troop of Horse. This group was part of the Royal Irish Army, which fought for the King.
New Titles and Challenges
Because of his loyalty and service to the King, Thomas was given an even higher title. In 1645, he became the 1st Earl of Ardglass. An "Earl" is a very high rank of nobility.
However, the King's opponents, the Parliament, did not like his support for the King. Parliament set up a group called the Committee for Compounding with Delinquents. This committee fined people who had supported the King. Thomas Cromwell had to pay a large fine of £460.
Interestingly, Thomas Cromwell was a distant relative of Oliver Cromwell, who was a powerful leader on the side of Parliament. This meant they were on opposite sides during the wars.
Family Life
Thomas Cromwell married Elizabeth Meverell. Her family owned lands in Staffordshire, England. Thomas and Elizabeth had three children:
- Wingfield Cromwell, 2nd Earl of Ardglass (born 1624, died 1668)
- Vere Essex Cromwell, 4th Earl of Ardglass (born 1625, died 1687)
- Mary Cromwell (died 1676), who married William FitzHerbert.
Both Thomas and his wife Elizabeth passed away in 1653. They were buried at St Peter's Church in Tickencote, England.
