Thomas Brian McKelvie Fairfax, also known as the 13th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, was an important Scottish figure. He was a nobleman, which means he belonged to a high-ranking family. He was also a politician for the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom. He lived from 1923 to 1964.
Who Was Lord Fairfax?
Thomas Brian McKelvie Fairfax was born on May 14, 1923. His father was Albert Fairfax, 12th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, and his mother was Maude Wishart McKelvie. His parents got married in 1922. Thomas also had a younger brother named Peregrine John Wishart Fairfax.
His Work in Government
During the Second World War, Thomas served as a lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. This was a special part of the British Army.
In 1945, he was chosen to be a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he represented Scotland in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.
He worked as a Parliamentary Private Secretary from 1951 to 1953. He helped important government leaders like Lord Woolton and Lord Salisbury. From 1953 to 1954, he also helped the Minister of Materials.
In 1954, he became a Lord-in-waiting. This role meant he was a government whip in the House of Lords, helping to make sure government plans were supported. He held this job until 1957.
His Family Life
In 1951, Lord Fairfax of Cameron married Sonia Helen Gunston. Her mother, Lady Doris Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, was the daughter of an important noble, the 2nd Marquess of Dufferin and Ava.
Thomas and Sonia had four children:

Thomas died in April 1964 when he was only 40 years old. His son, Nicholas, became the next Lord Fairfax of Cameron at just eight years old. A few years later, in 1967, his wife, Lady Fairfax of Cameron, was given a special role helping Queen Elizabeth II.
