Who Was Thomas Field?

Thomas Field was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1549. His father, William Field, was a doctor in the city. His mother was Janet Creagh.

Early Life and Education

Young Thomas went to school in Europe. He studied important subjects like history and literature in Paris and Douai. Later, he studied philosophy at Louvain, where he earned a master's degree.

In 1574, Thomas decided to join the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. This is a religious order of the Catholic Church. He began his training, called a novitiate, in Rome. After his training, he became a spiritual coadjutor, which means he was a helper in the Jesuit order.

A Journey to South America

After his training, Thomas Field traveled far across the ocean to Brazil. This was a huge journey in those days! He spent many years there with another famous Jesuit, José de Anchieta. José de Anchieta was known as the "apostle" of Brazil because he worked hard to spread the Christian faith there.

Later, Thomas Field was asked to move to Paraguay. This meant even more travel and exploration in new lands.

Captured by Pirates!

In 1586, something very exciting and dangerous happened to Thomas Field. He was captured by English pirates! The pirates put him into a small, open boat. This boat had no rudder to steer it and no oars to row.

Imagine being adrift in the vast ocean with no way to control your boat! Luckily, he drifted safely to Buenos Aires. This was a very lucky escape for him.

Later Life

After his incredible adventures, Thomas Field continued his work. He lived until 1625, passing away in Asunción, which is now the capital city of Paraguay. He lived a long life filled with travel, learning, and helping others.
