Thomas Gamey (1825 – February 20, 1898) was an important person in Ontario politics. He was born in Ireland and later became a farmer in Canada. He served as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the area called Grey Centre. He was an MPP in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1898. He belonged to two political groups: the Patrons of Industry and the Protestant Protective Association.

Early Life and Moving to Canada

Thomas Gamey was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1825. His father was also named Thomas Gamey. When Thomas was about nine years old, in 1834, his family moved to Canada. They settled in a part of Canada that was then called Upper Canada.

Public Service and Community Roles

Thomas Gamey was very active in his community. He held many important jobs over the years.

Serving Osprey Township

He was the reeve for Osprey Township for a total of 33 years! A reeve is like a mayor or head of a local government. He served many terms, including:

  • 1857 to 1859
  • 1861 to 1869
  • 1871 to 1875
  • 1879 to 1880
  • 1884 to 1885
  • 1889 to 1894

Leading Grey County

In 1866, Thomas Gamey also served as the warden for Grey County. A warden is the head of the county council, which oversees several townships. This was another important leadership role.

Justice of the Peace

Besides his elected roles, Gamey was also a justice of the peace. This meant he had the power to handle minor legal matters and keep order in the community.

Political Career in Ontario

Thomas Gamey became a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in 1894. He represented the people of Grey Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. This is where laws are made for the province of Ontario.
