Thomas Lowndes (astronomer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Lowndes (born in 1692, died May 12, 1748) was an important person who helped set up a special teaching position, called the Lowndean Professorship, for astronomy at Cambridge University in England. This professorship teaches about stars, planets, and shapes.

Who Was Thomas Lowndes?

From Cheshire to Carolina

Thomas Lowndes came from a family of landowners in Cheshire, England. His parents owned land there. In 1725, he was given a job as the provost marshal of South Carolina. This meant he was in charge of law and order in the colony. He preferred to have someone else do the work for him.

Helping the Government

In 1727, Lowndes said he played a big part in convincing the British government to buy the colony of Carolina. He gave up his special right to the job once the colony was fully owned by the King. He got his special right back in 1730, but he gave it up again in 1733.

He also suggested different ideas to the government. These ideas included ways to stop illegal wool trade between Ireland and France. He also had ideas to control the paper money in New England. Another idea was to get salt for the navy from salty water, called brine.

A Lasting Gift

When Thomas Lowndes died, he left his family's land in Cheshire to Cambridge University. This gift was used to start the special teaching position for astronomy and geometry. This position is still important today, helping students learn about the universe and shapes.
