Thomas McGaughey (born May 8, 1973) is an American football coach. He used to play football too. Currently, he is the special teams coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League (NFL). He has also worked for other NFL teams like the Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and New York Giants.

Thomas McGaughey's Playing Career

Thomas McGaughey played college football at the University of Houston. He was a defensive back from 1991 to 1995. In his last year, he was the special teams captain. After college, he played for a short time in the NFL. He was with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1996 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997. In 1997, he won the World Bowl with the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe.

Thomas McGaughey's Coaching Journey

McGaughey began his coaching career at the University of Houston in 1998. He started as a graduate assistant. In 2002, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs as an assistant special teams coach. He had been an intern there the year before.

Early NFL Coaching Roles

After his time with the Chiefs, McGaughey went back to Houston. He became their special teams coordinator. Then, he worked for the Denver Broncos in 2005 and 2006. He was an assistant special teams coordinator there. From 2007 to 2010, he held the same role for the New York Giants. In his first year with the Giants, the team won Super Bowl XLII. They beat the New England Patriots 17-14.

Becoming a Special Teams Coordinator

In 2011, McGaughey became the special teams coordinator for LSU. He stayed there until 2013. After that, he coached special teams for several NFL teams. He was with the New York Jets in 2014. In 2015, he coached for the San Francisco 49ers. From 2016 to 2017, he worked for the Carolina Panthers.

Returning to the New York Giants

On February 11, 2022, McGaughey returned to the New York Giants. He took on the role of special teams coordinator again. His time with the Giants ended on January 8, 2024.

Joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

On February 7, 2024, Thomas McGaughey was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He became their special teams coordinator for the 2024 season.
