Thomas Middleton (born March 1, 1589 – died around 1662) was an important English politician. He came from Horsham and Hangleton in Sussex. Thomas Middleton served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, at different times between 1640 and 1660. He was a supporter of the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Middleton was the son of John Middleton. His father was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Horsham. Thomas's mother was Frances Fowle.

Thomas Middleton went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1606. This is a famous university in England. In 1607, he also studied law at a place called Inner Temple. When his father passed away in 1636, Thomas inherited the family lands in Horsham.

Political Career and the English Civil War

In April 1640, Thomas Middleton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Horsham. This was during a time known as the Short Parliament. Later that same year, in November 1640, he was re-elected as MP for Horsham for the Long Parliament.

During the English Civil War, Thomas Middleton supported the Parliamentarian side. This group was also known as the Roundheads. The war was a big conflict in England. While he supported Parliament, he faced some challenges during this period.

Later Political Role

After the Civil War, Thomas Middleton continued his political work. In 1660, he was once again elected as an MP for Horsham. This election was for a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

Family Life

Thomas Middleton married Barbara Shelley on May 29, 1610. Barbara was the daughter of Henry Shelley. Together, Thomas and Barbara had a large family. They had six sons and five daughters.
