Thomas Mitchell (who lived from about 1735 to 1790) was an English artist. He was known for painting pictures of ships and the sea. He also worked for the navy as an official. Eventually, he became an assistant-surveyor for the navy.

About Thomas Mitchell

Thomas Mitchell started his career as a shipwright. A shipwright is someone who builds and repairs ships. He was also a talented painter of sea scenes.

He first showed his paintings in 1763 at the Free Society of Artists. At that time, he lived in a place called Tower Hill. He showed his art there again in 1768. Back then, he worked at Chatham Dockyard as an assistant shipbuilder.

Later, in 1774, he worked at Deptford Dockyard. After that, he joined the Navy Office. He eventually became an assistant Surveyor of the Navy. This was an important job helping to manage the navy's ships.

Thomas Mitchell also showed his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his work there from 1774 to 1789. Some of his early drawings, like a view of Westminster Bridge, date back to 1735. Some of his drawings were even turned into prints.
