Early Life and Education
Thomas Peabody Grosvenor was born on December 20, 1778. His hometown was Pomfret, Connecticut. His father was Seth Grosvenor.
Thomas studied hard and went to Yale College. He graduated in 1800. While at Yale, he was the president of a group called the Society of Brothers in Unity. After college, he studied law. He became a lawyer and started his own practice in Hudson, New York.
Political Career
Thomas Grosvenor began his public service early. In 1799, he wrote to Major General Alexander Hamilton. He recommended a person for a job in the United States Army.
New York State Service
From 1810 to 1812, he was a member of the New York State Assembly. This group helps make laws for New York State. He also worked as a District Attorney. He served in this role from 1810 to 1811. His district included Columbia, Greene, and Rensselaer counties.
United States Congress
Grosvenor was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Federalist Party. He first joined Congress on January 29, 1813. He was re-elected two more times. He served until March 4, 1817. In Congress, he helped create laws for the entire country.
Later Years and Personal Life
After his time in Congress, Thomas Grosvenor moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He continued to work as a lawyer there.
Family Life
In March 1815, Thomas Grosvenor married Mary Jane Hanson. She was the daughter of Alexander C. Hanson, a well-known lawyer. Mary Jane was also the sister of Alexander Contee Hanson, who became a U.S. Senator. Sadly, Mary Jane passed away later in 1815.
His Passing
Thomas Grosvenor died on April 24, 1817. This was only about fifteen months after his wife passed away. He died in Waterloo, Maryland. He was buried in Hudson, New York. After he died, a book he wrote was published. It was called A Sketch of the Life, last sickness and death, of Mrs. Mary Jane Grosvenor.
