Thomas Pelham-Clinton was an important figure in British history. He was a high-ranking officer in the British Army and a politician. He was known by different titles during his life. From 1779 to 1794, he was called the Earl of Lincoln. He later became the 3rd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne.
Thomas Pelham-Clinton served in the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament from 1774 to 1794. He became a Duke in 1794, just one year before he passed away.

Early Life and Family
Thomas Pelham-Clinton was born on July 1, 1752. He was christened, or given a Christian name, on July 28, 1752. This happened at a church called St Margaret's, Westminster. He was the second son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne. His mother was Lady Catherine Pelham. Even though he was the second son, he was the oldest one who survived to adulthood.
Starting a Military Career
After finishing his education, Thomas Pelham-Clinton decided to join the army. In April 1774, he traveled with other important British officers. They went to observe a war happening near the Danube River. This was the Second Russo-Turkish War.
Service in America
Thomas Pelham-Clinton also served in America during the American Revolutionary War. This war is sometimes called the American War of Independence. He worked as an Aide-de-Camp for his relative, General Sir Henry Clinton. An Aide-de-Camp is like a personal assistant to a high-ranking officer. Later, he also served as an Aide-de-Camp to the King himself. He rose through the ranks and became a Major-General in 1787.
Political Career and Titles
Besides his military work, Thomas Pelham-Clinton was also active in politics. He was a Member of Parliament for two different areas.
Representing Westminster and East Retford
He represented Westminster in Parliament from 1774 to 1780. After that, he represented East Retford from 1781 to 1794. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws for the country.
Becoming a Duke
In February 1794, his father passed away. This meant Thomas Pelham-Clinton inherited his father's title. He became the 3rd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire from 1794 to 1795. A Lord Lieutenant is the King's representative in a county.
Personal Life and Legacy
Thomas Pelham-Clinton married Lady Anna Maria Stanhope in May 1782. She was the daughter of William Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Harrington.
Family and Passing
Thomas and Anna Maria had four children together. They had two sons and two daughters. Thomas Pelham-Clinton passed away in May 1795. He was only 42 years old. He died at his home in Sunninghill, which is in Berkshire. He had been a Duke for only about a year. His oldest son, Henry, became the next Duke. His wife, the Duchess of Newcastle-under-Lyne, later married General Sir Charles Gregan Craufurd. She passed away in 1834.
