Thomas Price: A Church Leader

Thomas Price was born in 1599. He might have been born in Wales or in London, England.

His Early Life and Studies

Thomas Price went to Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. He studied hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1623. A few years later, in 1628, he earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. In 1626, he was chosen to be a "fellow" at the college. This means he became a senior member of the university staff.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

Thomas Price was ordained by William Bedell. This means he officially became a priest in the church. He then became an "archdeacon" in Bedell's church area, which was called the Diocese of Kilmore.

On March 10, 1661, Thomas Price became the Bishop of Kildare. This important ceremony took place in Christ Church, Dublin. The Archbishop of Dublin, James Margetson, was the one who made him a bishop. Later, on May 20, 1667, Thomas Price was given an even higher role. He became the Archbishop of Cashel.

Supporting the Irish Language

Thomas Price believed it was very important for the church to use the Irish language. He followed the ideas of William Bedell, who also thought the Irish language was significant.

Price made sure that some ministers who spoke Irish were ordained. This meant they could lead church services in Irish. In 1678, he asked for services in his own cathedral to be read from a large prayer book written in Irish. This book was given to him by Andrew Sall. Price also encouraged Sall to create an edition of the Irish New Testament. Thomas Price himself knew some Irish.

His Later Years

Thomas Price passed away in Cashel on August 4, 1685. He was 86 years old. He is remembered for his dedication to the church and his efforts to include the Irish language in its services.
