Thomas Thorild

Thomas Thorild (born in Svarteborg, Sweden, on April 18, 1759 – died in Greifswald, Swedish Pomerania, on October 1, 1808) was a famous Swedish poet, writer, and philosopher. He was also known as an early supporter of women's rights.

Thomas Thorild believed strongly in gender equality. In 1793, he wrote an important book called Om kvinnokönets naturliga höghet, which means "On the Natural Superiority of the Female Sex." In this book, he argued that men and women should be treated equally.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Thorild was born with the name Thomas Thorén. He grew up in Svarteborg, Sweden. He went to Lund University in Sweden to study. Later, he also studied and worked at the University of Greifswald in Germany.

He passed away in Greifswald, which was part of Swedish Pomerania at the time. Today, this area is part of Germany.

Ideas and Influence

Thomas Thorild was a big fan of the Sturm und Drang movement. This was a German movement in art and literature that focused on strong emotions and individual freedom. He did not like the French-inspired style called classicism, which was more about order and rules.

In 1795, he became a professor and librarian at the University of Greifswald. He was a very important person in the cultural world of Stockholm during the time of King Gustav III. This period is known as the Gustavian era.

Many women liked Thomas Thorild not only because he was handsome but also because he supported their rights and believed in equality between genders.

Legacy

Thomas Thorild's ideas were very influential. At Uppsala University in Sweden, there is a quote from him above the entrance to the main auditorium. It says:

"Thinking freely is great

But thinking right is greater"

A place in Stockholm is even named after him, called Thorildsplan.
