Discovering Thor's Past
The town of Thor began as a farming community. Many early settlers came from Scandinavia, especially from Norway. The first land claim was made in 1869 by Ole Willicksen, who was from Stavanger, Norway.
In 1881, the Western Town Lot Company planned out the town. Thor was officially mapped in 1882. It got its name from Thor, a powerful god in old Norse myths. For a while, Thor was connected by Iowa Highway 302, but this road was removed in 1980.
