Thornton is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States and a south suburb of Chicago. The population was 2,386 at the 2020 census. Thornton is home to the Thornton Quarry, one of the largest quarries in the world.

Thornton is located at 41°34′17″N 87°36′42″W / 41.57139°N 87.61167°W (41.571484, -87.611743).
According to the 2010 census, Thornton has a total area of 2.376 square miles (6.15 km2), of which 2.35 square miles (6.09 km2) (or 98.91%) is land and 0.026 square miles (0.07 km2) (or 1.09%) is water.

2010 Census
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,338 people, 956 households, and 621 families living in the village. The population density was 994.9 people per square mile (383.3/km2). There were 1,027 housing units at an average density of 437.0/sq mi (168.4/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 83.0% White, 9.6% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 3.3% some other race, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.8% of the population.
There were 956 households, out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were headed by married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.4% were someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44, and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 21.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 30.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
For the period 2007–11, the estimated median annual income for a household in the village was $58,750, and the median income for a family was $64,359. Male full-time workers had a median income of $51,528 versus $37,679 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,140. About 9.1% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 4.3% of those age 65 or over.
