The Vinland Sagas: Stories of Adventure
The Vinland Sagas are our main source of information about Thorvald. These sagas are like ancient history books or adventure stories. They tell us about the Norse voyages to North America.
- The Greenland Saga tells us about several trips. First, it mentions a sailor named Bjarni Herjolfsson. He saw new lands but did not land there.
- Then, Leif Erikson explored these lands. After Leif, his brother Thorvald Eiriksson made his own journey.
- The saga also talks about their sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir and a merchant named Thorfinn Karlsefni.
The sagas describe meeting native peoples in these new lands. The Norse called them Skrælings. These were the people living in the lands south and west of Greenland. The Norse named these places Vinland and Markland.
The Saga of Erik the Red tells a slightly different story. It describes one big trip led by Thorfinn Karlsefni. In this version, Thorvald Eriksson's journey is part of Karlsefni's larger expedition.
