Thousand Foot Krutch (often called TFK) is a rock band from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. They started in 1997 and play a mix of Christian rock, hard rock, and rap metal. The band's name means that we can't always make it on our own strength.

The band's main members are Trevor McNevan (who sings and plays guitar), Steve Augustine (drums), and Joel Bruyere (bass and backing vocals). TFK has released eight studio albums, two live albums, and three remix albums. They have sold over 1.1 million albums. Their music has reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart twice.

How the Band Started

The Early Days of TFK

Trevor McNevan formed Thousand Foot Krutch in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario. He started the band with his childhood friend Joel Bruyere and drummer Steve Augustine. Before TFK, Trevor's first band was called Oddball. That band released one album, Shutterbug, in 1995.

The Shutterbug album had 27 songs. Some were rock, and others were hip-hop. Trevor McNevan paid for the recording by working at places like McDonald's. A song from this album, "Lift It", was later re-recorded for TFK's first releases.

In 1997, Trevor wrote the songs for TFK's first album, That's What People Do. This album came out in 1998 and sold over 5,000 copies. A local radio station, CKWF 101.5 FM, played their song "Rhyme Animal". It became one of the most requested songs that year.

In 1999, 7 Ball Magazine named TFK one of the top 25 bands in North America. They also won awards like "Best Indie Recording" and "Vocalist of the Year". In 2000, they were named "Band of the Year" at The Wire Awards.

First Official Album: Set It Off

TFK released Set It Off on November 14, 2000. This was their first album released by an independent label. The album had a strong hip-hop and nu metal sound. Songs like "Puppet" and "Supafly" became popular on both regular and Christian radio.

The band toured a lot across North America. They sold 85,000 copies of Set It Off from their tour van. TFK toured with other bands like Finger Eleven and Sum 41. Three Days Grace, which was a cover band then, often opened for TFK. Trevor McNevan even helped with some of Three Days Grace's early recordings.

Around this time, Dave Smith, an early member, left the band. Trevor McNevan then started writing all the guitar parts himself. The band began using a live guitar player for shows instead of adding a new official member. A song from Set It Off, "Unbelievable", was used in the 2010 movie Just Wright.

Joining Tooth & Nail Records

In 2003, Thousand Foot Krutch signed with Tooth & Nail Records. They released their second album, Phenomenon. This album had less rap and more of a modern metal sound. It was very popular and sold 200,000 copies. This made it one of Tooth & Nail's best-selling albums.

In 2004, Set It Off was re-released through Tooth & Nail. This allowed more people to buy it. It also included six extra songs.

Trevor McNevan and Steve Augustine also started a side band called FM Static. This band plays pop-punk or pop-rock music. FM Static had many No. 1 songs, including "Crazy Mary".

On July 19, 2005, TFK released their third album, The Art of Breaking. This album moved away from the nu metal sound and focused more on heavy rock. It was the first album to feature short guitar solos. The song "Move" reached No. 16 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

In 2006, Trevor McNevan worked with TobyMac to write the song "Ignition". This song was used in Monday Night Football and NASCAR. Because of this, TFK joined TobyMac on his "Portable Sounds" tour in 2007.

On September 18, 2007, TFK released The Flame in All of Us. This album had a more mainstream rock sound. It included popular songs like "Falls Apart" and "Favorite Disease". "The Flame in All of Us" became the 1000th song to reach the ChristianRock.Net Top 30 Chart. The band toured with Skillet and played at many festivals.

For their album Welcome to the Masquerade, the band worked with Aaron Sprinkle again. The song "Fire It Up" was featured in video games like NHL 10 and in the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie trailer. The album came out on September 8, 2009, and reached No. 35 on the Billboard 200.

In mid-2009, Trevor McNevan had emergency surgery. This caused the band to cancel a festival show, but he was back performing a week later. They continued to play at festivals and tour. In 2010, "Fire it Up" was added to the Rock Band video game. The Detroit Red Wings hockey team used TFK's songs during their pre-game show.

On November 29, 2011, TFK announced they were leaving Tooth & Nail Records. They decided to release their next album, The End Is Where We Begin, on their own. They used crowdfunding to raise money for the album. This means fans helped pay for it. The song "War of Change" was given away for free. "War of Change" was also the theme song for WWE Over the Limit in 2012.

On October 15, 2013, the band released Made in Canada: The 1998-2010 Collection. This album had fourteen songs, including two new ones: "Searchlight" and "Complicate You".

The band used crowdfunding again in May 2014 for their album OXYGEN:INHALE. The first song from this album, "Born This Way", came out on July 22. Another song, "Untraveled Road", was released on YouTube on August 6.

In September and October 2015, Joshua Sturm filled in for Joel Bruyere on bass. Joel was in the hospital because of a collapsed lung.

TFK released three new songs before their album Exhale came out. These were "Born Again" (December 2015), "Incomplete" (February 2016), and "Running with Giants" (February 2016). The album Exhale was released on June 17, 2016. It reached No. 34 on the US Billboard 200 chart. On September 15, 2017, the band released another live album and DVD called Untraveled Roads.
