Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Adam Gontier was born in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Markham, Ontario. After his parents divorced, he moved back to the Peterborough area. In 1992, he attended Norwood District High School. There, he met Neil Sanderson and Brad Walst, who would later become his bandmates in Three Days Grace.
Gontier's mother, a professional singer and pianist, was a big musical influence on him. He started playing guitar when he was 12 years old. By age 14, he was already writing his own songs. Gontier has said that music is a way for him to express his emotions. Some of his favorite bands include Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.
Career in Music
Three Days Grace
In 1992, Gontier, Sanderson, and Walst started a band called "Groundswell" with two other friends while they were in high school. By 1997, the three of them regrouped and renamed their band "Three Days Grace."
A record company called Jive Records signed them. In 2003, they released their first album, Three Days Grace. It included the hit single "I Hate Everything About You", which became a number one rock song in Canada.
Their next albums were also very successful. One-X (2006) and Transit of Venus (2012) both reached number five on the American Billboard 200 music chart. Their 2009 album, Life Starts Now, did even better, reaching number three.
Gontier left Three Days Grace in January 2013. The band continued with a new lead singer, Matt Walst, who is the brother of bassist Brad Walst.
In 2023, fans were excited when Gontier joined Three Days Grace on stage for two special performances. Then, on October 3, 2024, the band announced that Gontier was officially back. Matt Walst also stayed, making the band a five-person group. They began recording new music together. The band announced their eighth studio album, Alienation, is set to be released on August 22, 2025.
Saint Asonia
After leaving Three Days Grace, Gontier started a new project. In 2014, he began writing songs with Mike Mushok, the guitarist from the band Staind. They decided to form a new band called Saint Asonia. They were joined by drummer Rich Beddoe and bassist Corey Lowery.
In 2015, Saint Asonia released their first single, "Better Place", and their first album, Saint Asonia. They later released a second album, Flawed Design, in 2019. In 2022, they released two shorter albums, called EPs, which were later combined into one album called Introvert/Extrovert.
Other Music Projects
Gontier has worked with many other musicians. In 2006, he was part of a supergroup called Big Dirty Band with members of other famous Canadian bands. They recorded a song for the Trailer Park Boys movie soundtrack.
