History of Three Bridges
Early Land Owners
In the past, farmers John Vlerebone and Harriet Foster Cline owned land in the Three Bridges area. They sold some of their land to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. This land was used for the South Branch Line, which later became part of the Black River and Western Railroad. After 1864, Vlerebone and Kline divided their land along Old York Road into smaller plots.
The Railroad's Arrival
In 1875, the Lehigh Valley Railroad built a major railway line through Three Bridges. This line, now owned by Norfolk Southern Railway, is still active today. In its busiest times, many trains stopped in the village. These trains carried farm products and passengers every day.
Three Bridges Today
Over time, many businesses and passenger train services left the village. However, Three Bridges still has important services. Today, you can find a post office, a bank, and a branch of the Hunterdon County Library System here. There are also a few other local businesses.
