The Story of Three Wishes
The movie starts in the present day. We meet Tom Holman, an adult who is busy with his family. One day, while driving, he almost hits a man near a cemetery. Seeing this man makes Tom remember something from his childhood.
A Special Summer in 1955
The story then goes back to 1955. Jean Holman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is a single mom. She has two sons: 11-year-old Tom (Joseph Mazzello) and 5-year-old Gunny (Seth Mumy). Jean's husband was a soldier. He went missing during the Korean War and was thought to have died.
Young Tom really misses his dad. He feels sad because he can't do father-son things like baseball or camping. Gunny, his younger brother, often complains of stomach pains. Doctors haven't been able to figure out why.
One day, Jean is driving with her sons. She accidentally hits a man named Jack McCloud (Patrick Swayze). Jack is a drifter, which means he travels around without a fixed home. His leg is broken in the accident. Jean feels bad for him. She invites Jack and his female dog, Betty Jane, to stay at her house. They will stay until Jack's leg gets better.
Jack Joins the Family
At first, it's a bit strange having Jack and Betty Jane around. But soon, the family starts to love them. Everyone wants Jack to stay. Jack begins to teach Tom how to play baseball. They form a strong bond, almost like a father and son.
Meanwhile, Gunny thinks Jack and Betty Jane are more than they seem. He is determined to find out their secret.
A Magical Secret and Goodbyes
Gunny soon discovers Betty Jane is not just a dog. She is a genie! This means she can grant wishes.
As Jack gets closer to the family, Tom starts to see him as a father figure. Tom's baseball coach, Coach Schramka (Jay O. Sanders), recognizes Jack. He remembers Jack as a famous baseball player who disappeared during World War II. Jack denies this.
Jean's friend, Phil (David Marshall Grant), sees Jack as a rival. He worries Jack might take Jean's attention away from him.
When Jack's leg heals, he decides it's time to leave. Tom feels abandoned again, just like when his own father disappeared. Jean is also sad but knows Jack can't stay forever. Jack says goodbye to Tom. Tom rides his bike to a hill, feeling upset. Then he changes his mind and races back to the highway. He sees Jack getting into a truck and can't reach him in time.
Wishes Come True
On 4th of July, the wishes start to come true. Gunny's wish is fulfilled when he flies in the air. No one else sees him flying during the fireworks show. Tom's wish also comes true. His long-lost father is found alive! He returns home after being freed from where he was held in the People's Republic of China.
Back to the Present
The movie returns to the present day. Adult Tom walks into the cemetery. He meets Jack again. They talk for a short time. Tom learns that Jack's real wish wasn't just for Tom's father to come home. Jack's wish was for Tom to be happy with the family he already had. After their talk, Jack disappears. Tom, feeling much better, holds his wife close. The camera then shows a tombstone. It says Jack McCloud died on August 6, 1944.
