Thruepang Palace is a special old building in Bhutan. It's a type of fortress called a dzong. This palace has been important in Bhutan's history for a long time.

A Look Back in Time

The palace was built on a hillside in 1648. This spot was chosen because it was easy to control the area from there. The first two kings of Bhutan used this fortress to rule the country. It was a very important place for them.

Modern Days at the Palace

Thruepang Palace is famous as the birthplace of the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. He was born there in 1928 and spent his early years growing up in the palace.

This palace was also a second home for the second king, Jigme Wangchuck, and Queen Ashi Puntsho Choden. Today, Thruepang Palace is still used by the current king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. He uses it as a winter palace.

Where is the Palace?

The dzong is located in a village called Thruepang. This village is part of the Nubi area in the Trongsa region of Bhutan. There's a local market not far from the palace. The palace sits on a hill that leads right down to Thruepang village.

If you travel from Thimphu, the capital city, it's about 192 kilometers away. The trip can take around 8 hours.

What Does it Look Like?

Thruepang Palace is more like a large house than a huge, grand palace. It has two stories and sits on about 10 acres of land.
