Thunder Rising is an exciting fantasy novel for kids. It's part of the popular Warriors series, written by Erin Hunter. This book is the second one in the Dawn of the Clans story arc. The first book was The Sun Trail.
The Dawn of the Clans series tells the story of a group of cats who act like humans (this is called anthropomorphic). They are trying to find a peaceful way to live together. This happens long before the famous five Clans of the Warriors series were formed. These future Clans include ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan.
The cats in this story used to be part of a bigger group called the Tribe of Rushing Water. They left their mountain home because there wasn't enough food. Their leader had a special vision that told them to find a new place to live. Thunder Rising focuses on a young cat named Thunder. He grows up with his kind uncle, Gray Wing. Thunder's father, Clear Sky, left him when he was a kit. The story shows Thunder trying to decide where he truly belongs. He feels pulled between the cat who raised him and his wish to connect with his birth father.

What Happens in Thunder Rising?
Thunder's Journey and Choices
A few months after the first book, The Sun Trail, the cats from the Tribe of Rushing Water have found a new home. Thunder, the son of Clear Sky and Storm, is living with his uncle, Gray Wing. A big forest fire starts in Clear Sky's territory. This forces Clear Sky and his group to seek safety with Gray Wing's group for a while.
While they are staying together, Clear Sky asks Thunder if he wants to live with him in the forest. Thunder agrees, hoping to get to know his father better. He stays with Clear Sky for a short time. However, Thunder soon sees that Clear Sky cares mostly about power. He doesn't seem to care much about the other cats in his group. Because of this, Thunder decides to leave. He returns to Gray Wing and his kind group of cats.
Where Did the Idea for the Book Come From?
Real-World Places and Authors that Inspired the Story
The places in Thunder Rising are inspired by real locations. Many of them are similar to places in the United Kingdom. For example, the forest where the cats live is based on the New Forest. This is a large area of woodland and open land in England.
The authors also got ideas from other famous writers. They were inspired by the works of authors like J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. These authors wrote well-known fantasy stories.
Who are the Main Characters?
Meet the Cat Groups and Their Leaders
The main characters in Thunder Rising live in two different groups. Each group is led by one of two brothers: Clear Sky or Gray Wing.
Clear Sky's group is mostly made up of cats who are good at hunting in thick bushes. Some cats in his group, like Falling Feather, are also good at fishing and swimming.
Gray Wing's group lives on the moor, which is an open, grassy area. Cats in this group, like Wind and Gorse, can run very fast. This helps them catch rabbits on the moor. Most of the cats in both groups came from the mountain where food was hard to find.
