The Thur River starts its journey high up near the Säntis mountain. This area is in the southeastern part of the Canton of St. Gallen. This canton is one of Switzerland's many regions.
The Thur's Path Through Switzerland
As the Thur flows, it travels through several interesting places.
Journey Through St. Gallen
First, the river winds its way through the Toggenburg region. This is a beautiful valley known for its green landscapes. The Thur also passes by the town of Wil in the Canton of St. Gallen.
Flowing into Thurgau
After leaving Wil, the Thur enters the canton named Thurgau. This canton is actually named after the river itself! The river then flows past Frauenfeld, which is the main city, or capital, of Thurgau.
Reaching Zurich and the Rhine
The last part of the Thur River, about 19 kilometers (around 12 miles), flows through the Canton of Zurich. Finally, the Thur joins the much larger Rhine River. This meeting point is near the border with Germany, just south of the city of Schaffhausen.
