Tiara Mack (born December 21, 1993) is an American politician who serves in the Rhode Island Senate. A politician is a person who works in government. As a member of the Democratic Party, she represents the 6th district of Rhode Island. She took office on January 5, 2021.
Early Life and Education
Tiara Mack was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1993. She grew up in Georgia and South Carolina. Her mother was a teacher, and her family faced money troubles when she was young.
In 2012, Mack moved to Providence, Rhode Island, to go to Brown University, a famous college. She studied public health and graduated in 2016.
While at Brown, Mack was a star player on the women's rugby team. She was coached by Kathy Flores, a winner of the Rugby World Cup. In May 2022, Mack was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the USA Rugby National Championship.
Political Career
Winning the Election
In 2020, Mack decided to run for the Rhode Island Senate. She ran against the senator who was already in office, Harold Metts, in the Democratic primary election. A primary is an election where voters choose which candidate from their party will run in the main election.
Mack's campaign was popular with younger voters. She won the primary election with 60% of the vote, which meant she became the new senator for her district.
Work as a Senator
When she was elected, Mack made history. She became the first openly LGBTQ+ Black person to be elected to the Rhode Island Senate.
Mack uses social media to talk about important issues. She believes in a person's right to make their own choices about their body and health. In July 2022, she posted a video that got a lot of attention online. She used this attention to start a campaign on Twitter to support different social causes. She said she supports things like fairness, equal rights for all people, and justice.
In December 2024, Mack was chosen for a special program called the Future Caucus Prenatal-to-Three Innovation Fellowship. This program recognized her work in trying to improve healthcare for families.
