The Tibetan sandgrouse (Syrrhaptes tibetanus) is a large bird that belongs to the sandgrouse family. These birds live and have their babies on the dry, rocky plateaus of Tibet and nearby areas in central Asia. They are well-known for their ability to survive in tough, high-altitude environments.

What is a Sandgrouse?

A sandgrouse is a type of bird that looks a bit like a pigeon but is related to them. They are known for living in dry, open areas like deserts and grasslands. Sandgrouse are special because they can fly long distances to find water. They also have unique feathers that can soak up water, which they carry back to their chicks.

Where the Tibetan Sandgrouse Lives

The Tibetan sandgrouse makes its home in the high, dry lands of the Tibetan Plateau. This area is very high up, often more than 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet) above sea level. It's a tough place to live because it's cold, windy, and there isn't much water. The ground is often stony and covered with sparse plants.

Habitat and Environment

These birds prefer open, flat areas with lots of small stones and sparse grass. They can be found near mountains and valleys, but they usually stay away from places with thick forests or deep snow. Their feathers help them blend in with the rocky ground, making it hard for predators to spot them.

Appearance of the Tibetan Sandgrouse

The Tibetan sandgrouse is a medium-sized bird, about 30 to 41 centimeters (12 to 16 inches) long. They have a plump body, a small head, and short legs.

Colors and Markings

Their feathers are mostly sandy brown and grey, which helps them hide in their rocky home. They have dark markings on their back and wings. The males and females look quite similar, but males might have slightly brighter colors. They have long, pointed wings, which help them fly quickly over long distances.

What They Eat

Tibetan sandgrouse are mostly herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, buds, and small leaves they find on the ground.

Finding Food and Water

Because their habitat is so dry, finding water is very important. They often fly many miles each day to reach water sources like lakes or rivers. They usually visit these water spots early in the morning or late in the evening.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Tibetan sandgrouse usually breed during the spring and summer months. They are ground-nesting birds, meaning they build their nests right on the ground.

Nests and Chicks

The female lays her eggs in a shallow dip in the ground, often hidden among rocks or plants. She usually lays 2 to 3 eggs. Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm until they hatch. Once the chicks hatch, they are covered in downy feathers and can move around soon after.

How Parents Care for Chicks

A very special thing about sandgrouse is how the male parent brings water to the chicks. He soaks his belly feathers in water, and the chicks then drink the water directly from his feathers. This is a clever way for them to get water in a dry environment where water sources might be far from the nest.

Conservation Status

The Tibetan sandgrouse is listed as "Least Concern" (LC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means that their population is currently stable and they are not considered to be in danger of extinction. However, like all wildlife, they could be affected by changes to their habitat in the future.
