Tibula facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tibula was an ancient town located on the island of Sardinia, which is now part of Italy. It was situated near the northern tip of the island. For many ancient travelers coming from Corsica, Tibula was likely the usual place to land.

Because of its importance as a travel hub, old Roman travel guides, known as Itineraries, listed at least four different routes that started from Tibula. This shows how important the town was for moving around the region in ancient times.

Where Was Tibula Located?

The exact spot where Tibula once stood is still a bit of a mystery today. Different ancient maps and modern researchers have suggested various locations.

Ptolemy's Idea

A famous ancient geographer named Ptolemy thought Tibula was where the modern town of Castelsardo is now. This spot is on the north coast of Sardinia, not far from Porto Torres. However, other ancient travel records don't quite agree with Ptolemy's idea.

Ptolemy also mentioned a group of people called the Tibulati, who were probably connected to the town. He placed them in the far north of the island. This suggests that the town itself was also in the northernmost part of Sardinia.

Other Theories

Many clues from the old Roman travel guides point to Tibula being in the very northern part of the island.

A researcher named De la Marmora, whose ideas were also used by Smith, believed Tibula was at a small bay called Porto di Lungo Sardo. This bay is very close to the northernmost point of Sardinia, which Ptolemy called the Errebantium Promontorium.

More recently, the people who created the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, a very detailed map of the ancient world, think Tibula was located at what is now Santa Teresa Gallura. This town is also in the northern part of Sardinia.
