The tiger tail seahorse (Hippocampus comes) is a special type of fish. It belongs to the Syngnathidae family, which also includes pipefishes. This amazing creature was first described by Theodore Cantor in 1850. You can find it in warm waters around countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
These seahorses love to live in places with lots of underwater plants and coral reefs. Sadly, their homes are shrinking because of habitat loss. This means they are facing threats in the wild.

What is a Tiger Tail Seahorse?
The tiger tail seahorse gets its name from its cool striped tail. It often has yellow and black stripes, just like a tiger! These seahorses are medium-sized. They can grow up to about 15 centimeters (around 6 inches) long.
Their bodies are covered in tough, thin skin stretched over bony rings. This makes them hard for other animals to eat. Unlike most fish, seahorses swim upright, not horizontally. They use a small fin on their back to move around.
Where do they live?
Tiger tail seahorses live in the Western Central Pacific Ocean. This includes areas near Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. They prefer tropical waters, which are warm and sunny.
You can often find them in pairs. They like to hang out in coral reefs, sponge gardens, or even floating seaweed like Sargassum. They are also nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night.
What do they eat?
Tiger tail seahorses have a long snout, which is like a built-in straw. They use it to suck up tiny food items. Their diet includes small fish, tiny shrimp, and plankton. Plankton are very small plants and animals that float in the water.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
Tiger tail seahorses usually live for about 1 to 5 years in the wild. In captivity, they might live a bit shorter, around 0 to 1.5 years.
One of the most interesting things about seahorses is how they have babies. The male seahorse is the one who carries the eggs! He has a special pouch on his chest, like a kangaroo. This pouch can hold anywhere from 1 to 2,000 eggs. The pregnancy lasts for about 1 to 4 weeks. After that, tiny baby seahorses hatch from the pouch.
Why are they important?
Tiger tail seahorses are an important part of their ocean homes. They help keep the balance in their ecosystems. However, their populations have been decreasing. This is mainly because of too much fishing and habitat destruction.
Seahorses are sometimes caught for traditional Chinese medicine. As many as 20 million seahorses might be caught each year for this purpose. To help protect them, the import and export of seahorses have been controlled since May 15, 2004, under an agreement called CITES. This helps to make sure they are not overfished.
