History of Tijeras
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became a special area of the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated territory." This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Tijeras and a nearby area called Emajagual had a combined population of 1,005 people.
