Timothy Michael Krul, born on April 3, 1988, is a professional football player from the Netherlands. He plays as a goalkeeper.
Krul started his football journey at youth clubs RAS and ADO Den Haag. In 2005, he moved to Newcastle United in England. He made his first team debut for Newcastle in the UEFA Cup, keeping a clean sheet (meaning the other team didn't score). He later signed a new contract and had loan spells at Falkirk and Carlisle United.
When he returned to Newcastle, he became the main goalkeeper. He won awards and signed another contract. He also went on loan to Ajax and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands to get more playing time after an injury. In 2017, Krul joined Brighton & Hove Albion, first on loan, then permanently. His career continued at Norwich City, where he was named the club's Player of the Season and helped them win the EFL Championship twice.
Krul played for the Netherlands at many different age levels starting in 2002. He played his first game for the senior national team in 2011. He was part of the team that finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He famously played in the quarter-final penalty shootout against Costa Rica, helping his team win.

Tim Krul's Club Career Highlights
Starting at Newcastle United
Krul began his career in his hometown at RAS and then at ADO Den Haag. In the summer of 2005, he joined the Premier League club Newcastle United. There was a disagreement about a transfer fee, but it was eventually settled.
Krul made his first appearance for Newcastle on November 2, 2006, in a UEFA Cup match against Palermo. He played very well, making great saves and keeping a clean sheet. This means Palermo didn't score any goals against him.
He faced some injuries early on, needing two operations that kept him out for almost six months. He returned to play in April 2007. In June 2007, he signed a new four-year contract with Newcastle. That same month, he helped the Dutch Under-21 team win the European Championships.
Loan Spells: Falkirk and Carlisle
On August 3, 2007, Krul went on loan to the Scottish team Falkirk. He played his first game for them the next day, keeping another clean sheet in a 4–0 win. Falkirk wanted to sign him permanently, but Newcastle said no.
During his time at Falkirk, he was sent off (given a red card) for the first time in his career. He also dislocated his shoulder, which ended his season early.
On November 21, 2008, Krul joined Carlisle United on a one-month loan. This loan was extended for another month before he returned to Newcastle in January 2009.
Becoming Newcastle's Main Goalkeeper

After his loans, Krul returned to Newcastle as a backup goalkeeper. He made his first league appearance on August 8, 2009, coming on as a substitute. He played well, and a newspaper called him "an excellent reserve goalkeeper."
Krul made his Premier League debut for Newcastle on September 18, 2010, coming on as a substitute. He then started his first Premier League game on September 26. After several good performances, he became the team's first-choice goalkeeper.
In the 2011–12 season, Krul started strong, keeping clean sheets in the first two matches. On December 3, 2011, he played his 50th game for Newcastle. He saved a penalty kick and made many other impressive saves in that match. In March 2012, Krul signed a new five-year contract. At the end of the season, he won the Toon Talk's Newcastle United Player of the Year award.
For the 2012–13 season, Krul was given the number 1 jersey. He started the season well but then got an elbow injury while playing for his country. He returned to play in October 2012. He later injured his ankle and then dislocated his shoulder, which meant he missed the rest of that season.
Before the 2013–14 season, Krul returned from his injuries. In November, he played incredibly well, letting in only two goals and keeping clean sheets in two big matches. He made 14 saves in one game! His amazing performances earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award for November.
Loans Back to the Netherlands
On August 25, 2016, Krul extended his contract with Newcastle. He then joined Ajax in the Netherlands on a season-long loan. This was to help him get more playing time as he recovered from injury. This loan ended early, and in January 2017, he joined another Dutch team, AZ Alkmaar, on loan for the rest of the season.
Time at Brighton & Hove Albion
On August 31, 2017, Krul joined Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan. He reunited with his former Newcastle manager, Chris Hughton. He made his debut for Brighton in an EFL Cup game. The very next day, he signed a permanent deal with Brighton, ending his twelve years with Newcastle. He left the club at the end of the season.
Success with Norwich City
Krul signed with Championship club Norwich City on July 24, 2018. He signed a new three-year contract in June 2019. Krul was named Norwich City's Player of the Season for the 2019–20 season. He was only the fifth goalkeeper to win this award for the club.
Krul continued as Norwich's starting goalkeeper for the 2020–21 season. He had a hamstring injury in November but returned to help Norwich win the Championship and get promoted back to the Premier League.
He was again the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2021–22 season. He missed some games due to injury, and Norwich was relegated back to the Championship. In the 2022–23 season, Krul started as the main goalkeeper again. However, he was later replaced by another goalkeeper. He made his final appearance for Norwich in a game against Burnley.
Joining Luton Town
On August 17, 2023, Krul signed with Luton Town, a team that had just been promoted to the Premier League. The club announced in May 2025 that Krul would leave when his contract ended in June.
Tim Krul's International Career

Krul played for the Netherlands national team at various youth levels. He played for the Under-17 team in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He also played for the Under-21 team in tournaments and qualifying games.
On June 4, 2011, Krul played his first game for the senior Netherlands team in a friendly match against Brazil. He kept a clean sheet in the 0–0 draw, making several good saves. He played his second international match a few days later against Uruguay.
In June 2014, Krul was chosen for the Netherlands' squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In the quarter-final match against Costa Rica, the coach, Louis van Gaal, made a special substitution. He brought Krul on in the very last minute of extra time, just for the penalty shootout. Krul saved two of the five penalties he faced, helping the Netherlands win 4–3. This was the first time in World Cup history that a goalkeeper was brought on only for a penalty shootout.
