Early Life and Education
Tim Story was born in Los Angeles on March 13, 1970. From a young age, he loved making movies. He started by using an 8mm movie camera that his brother no longer wanted.
He went to Westchester High School in Los Angeles. Some of his classmates included famous people like jazz pianist Eric Reed and actresses Regina King and Nia Long. Tim was even the senior class president at his high school. After high school, he studied film and graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1991.
While in high school, Tim Story tried a career in music for a short time. However, he later decided to focus his energy on directing movies instead.
Tim Story's Film Career
Tim Story directed his first full-length movie, One of Us Tripped, in 1997. He made this film with a very small budget, learning how to create a movie without spending a lot of money. His second movie, The Firing Squad (1999), also had a small budget.
After these early films, Tim started directing music videos. This experience helped him a lot when he directed Barbershop in 2002. This movie was a big success and helped him become a well-known director. He continued this success with Taxi in 2004.
The movie studio, 20th Century Fox, was very impressed with his work. They offered him the chance to direct Fantastic Four in 2005, which was exciting for Tim because he was a fan of the comic books. At that time, Fantastic Four became the highest-earning superhero movie directed by an African-American director.
Tim learned many important lessons from directing big movies like the Fantastic Four films. He realized that directing large movies is like directing three movies at once: the main filming, the action scenes, and the visual effects. He also learned how important it is to stay involved and make sure everything is going as planned with the visual effects and production teams.
