History of Timmins Square
How Timmins Square Started
Timmins Square first opened its doors in 1976. It was built and owned by a company called Multi Malls. Imagine, that's almost 50 years ago! In 1982, another company named Campeau Corporation bought the mall.
Mall Expansions and New Stores
Over the years, Timmins Square grew bigger. In 1989, the mall was expanded to make room for a large department store called Sears. Sears became one of the main "anchor" stores, which are big stores that help attract many shoppers. Other big stores that have been anchors at the mall include Walmart, Zellers, Winners, and Sport Chek.
A Special Museum Exhibit
In 2000, something really cool happened at the mall. A small part of the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre opened there! One of the special items on display was an outfit worn by famous singer Shania Twain at the 1999 Country Music Association Awards. This was a big draw for visitors!
New Owners and Renovations
In 1999, the mall was owned by Laing Property Corporation. Then, in May 2001, a company called RioCan bought Timmins Square. RioCan is a big company that owns many shopping centers. After 30 years, the mall got a major makeover! A big renovation project was finished in 2006, making the mall look fresh and modern for shoppers.
