His Life and Cooking Journey
Timothy Hollingsworth was born in Houston, Texas. In 1980, his parents, Karen and Quintin Hollingsworth, moved with their five children to Placerville, California. Growing up, family dinners were a very important part of his life.
Starting Out in the Kitchen
In 2001, Timothy began his cooking career at The French Laundry. This famous restaurant is located in Napa Valley, California. He started as a "commis," which is like an apprentice chef. He learned a lot from the head chefs there, Eric Ziebold and Corey Lee.
In 2004, the owner, Thomas Keller, chose Timothy for a special team. This team traveled to New York City to get ready for a new restaurant called Per Se. After this, Timothy went back to The French Laundry.
Becoming a Head Chef
Timothy was promoted to "sous chef" in 2005. A sous chef is the second-in-command in a kitchen. Then, in 2009, he became the "chef de cuisine." This means he was the main chef in charge of the kitchen. During his time at The French Laundry, Timothy also traveled to France, Germany, and England. He trained with famous European chefs like Gordon Ramsay.
Opening His Own Restaurant
In 2012, Timothy Hollingsworth decided to leave The French Laundry. He moved to Los Angeles, California, to start his own projects. He worked as a cooking consultant in different countries. In 2015, he teamed up with The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Together, they opened his restaurant, Otium, in Downtown Los Angeles.
Otium closed its doors for good on September 8, 2024. This happened because of big challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. It became too hard to keep the restaurant open.
