Timothy Long, born on December 19, 1967, is a well-known American conductor and pianist. He has performed in many places across the United States and in other countries. Timothy Long is also a member of the Thlopthlocco Tribal Town, which is part of the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma.

Who is Timothy Long?

Timothy Long grew up in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He is a respected teacher at Stony Brook University. At Stony Brook, he is the music director for the Stony Brook Opera. He also helps the music director at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.

His Musical Journey

Timothy Long started his musical studies at Oklahoma City University. He learned to play both the piano and the violin there. While studying, he also played the violin in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic orchestra. Later, he continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music. He focused on piano performance and literature for his advanced degree. Timothy Long returned to Eastman to become the Opera Music Director.

For three years, Timothy Long worked as an assistant conductor. He helped Robert Spano at the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He also spent two years as an associate conductor at the New York City Opera.

Leading the Coast Orchestra

Timothy Long is the founder and conductor of The Coast Orchestra. This special orchestra is made up entirely of classically trained Native American musicians. They have performed in important places like the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. They have also played at the American Museum of Natural History and Rutgers University.

The Coast Orchestra performs different kinds of music. This includes the original music for a movie from 1914. The movie is called In the Land of the Head Hunters by Edward S. Curtis.

His Recordings

In 2008, Timothy Long released his first recording. He was both the conductor and the pianist on this recording. It was for a play/opera called The Music Teacher. This work was created by Wallace Shawn and Allen Shawn. The recording was released by Bridge Records.
