Timothy has also played on other tours like PGA Tour Latinoamérica and the Web.com Tour. He has won nine professional golf tournaments across different parts of the world.
Timothy O'Neal's Golf Journey
Timothy O'Neal has had an interesting career in golf. He is known for his skill and determination. He also faced some tough moments, like missing out on a spot in the PGA Tour by just one shot, not once, but twice!
Starting as an Amateur Golfer
Before he became a professional, Timothy O'Neal was a very successful amateur golfer. While he was studying at Jackson State University, he won 16 college golf tournaments. This showed everyone how talented he was. In 1997, he also won the Georgia Amateur Championship.
Becoming a Professional Golfer
Timothy O'Neal turned professional in 1997. Early in his career, he played on smaller golf tours in the U.S. In 2001, he earned his card for the Buy.com Tour, which is now called the Korn Ferry Tour. This was a big step for him.
Challenges and Comebacks
Timothy had a challenging first year on the Buy.com Tour. He only finished in the top 10 twice. He later lost his tour card for the 2003 season. In 2004, he again came very close to joining the PGA Tour. He missed it by just one stroke at the qualifying school. However, this effort helped him get back his playing rights for the Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) for the 2005 season.
His return to the Nationwide Tour was more successful. In 2005, he achieved his best finish yet, coming in second place at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. He continued to play well in 2005 and 2006. However, his performance dropped in 2007 and 2008, and he lost his tour card again.
Playing Around the World
After losing his Nationwide Tour privileges, Timothy O'Neal played on various international tours. These included the Asian Tour, the EPD Tour, and the Atlas Pro Tour in Morocco. In 2011, he was asked to lead the golf program at Jackson State University, but he decided to keep playing.
In 2013, Timothy started playing on PGA Tour Latinoamérica. He quickly found success there. He won the Arturo Calle Colombian Open and the Abierto de Chile in his first season. These wins helped him finish third on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica money list. This strong performance allowed him to get his tour card back for the 2014 Web.com Tour.
Reaching the PGA Tour and Champions Tour
At 42 years old, Timothy O'Neal played in his first PGA Tour event. He qualified for the 2015 U.S. Open, a major championship. He also played on the Advocates Pro Golf Tour, which helps create more opportunities for minority golfers.
In 2022, Timothy O'Neal achieved another significant milestone. He was one of five golfers to earn a spot on the PGA Tour Champions through their qualifying school. This tour is for professional golfers aged 50 and older.
In October 2024, Timothy O'Neal won the Dominion Energy Charity Classic. This was his first victory on the PGA Tour Champions. This win earned him $350,000 and secured his spot for the 2025 PGA Tour Champions season.
