Tin foil facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tin foil is a very thin sheet of metal made from tin. For a long time, it was used to wrap and protect food and other items.

However, after World War II, tin foil was mostly replaced by aluminium foil. Aluminium foil became more popular because it was better in many ways. Tin foil was very common in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

What is Tin Foil?

Tin foil is a type of metal foil that is made from the element tin. It's created by rolling tin into extremely thin sheets.

How is it Different from Aluminum Foil?

Even though they look similar, tin foil and aluminium foil have some key differences.

  • Stiffness: Tin foil is generally stiffer than aluminium foil. This means it's not as flexible and can be harder to mold around objects.
  • Taste: One of the main reasons tin foil was replaced is that it could give a slight taste to food wrapped in it. This "tinny" taste wasn't very pleasant. Aluminium foil does not usually affect the taste of food.
  • Corrosion: Tin foil is good at resisting corrosion and oxidation. This means it doesn't rust or break down easily when exposed to air or moisture.

History of Tin Foil

Tin foil was widely used before aluminium foil became available. People used it for many things, like wrapping tobacco, chocolates, and even for lining tea chests. Its use declined significantly once aluminium foil, which was cheaper and had better properties for food storage, became common.
