Tinogasta is a city located in the western part of the Catamarca Province in Argentina. It sits on the right side of the Abaucán River. The city is about 280 kilometers (174 miles) away from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, which is the capital city of the province.
In 2010, about 11,500 people lived in Tinogasta. It is the main town of the Tinogasta Department, which is like a county. The name "Tinogasta" comes from the old Cacán language. Tino means "meeting," and gasta means "town." So, Tinogasta means "meeting town."
Tinogasta is a popular place for tourists. People visit for adventure activities in the mountains. There are also hot springs where visitors can relax. The city has museums with interesting old artifacts. The main way people make a living here is through farming, especially growing vines to make wine.
