Thiruvarur district is a region in the Tamil Nadu state of India. It's one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu. In 2011, about 1.26 million people lived here. There were slightly more girls than boys, with 1,017 girls for every 1,000 boys.

Geography of Thiruvarur
This district covers an area of 2,161 square kilometers. It is surrounded by other districts and a body of water. To the east is Nagapattinam district. To the north is Mayiladuthurai district. Thanjavur District is to the west. The Palk Strait is to the south. There is also a small border to the northeast with the Karaikal district of Puducherry.

Based on the 2011 census, Thiruvarur district had a population of 1,264,277 people. For every 1,000 males, there were 1,017 females. This is higher than the national average of 929 females. About 20% of the people lived in cities or towns.

History of Thiruvarur District
Before 1991, the area that is now Thiruvarur district was part of Thanjavur District. Later, in 1991, the current areas of Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam were separated from Thanjavur to form the Nagapattinam district.
The Thiruvarur district we know today was created in 1997. This happened when the Nagapattinam District was split. Also, the Valangaiman area from Thanjavur district was added to it.
