Titleholders Championship facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Titleholders Championship was a big golf tournament for women. It was played from 1937 to 1966 and then again in 1972. Later, it was officially named a "major championship" by the LPGA Tour, which is like the top league for women's professional golf.

It's good to know that this tournament is different from two other LPGA events with similar names:

  • The Mercury Titleholders Championship: This was a regular LPGA tournament, not a major one, held from 1990 to 1999.
  • The CME Group Titleholders: This is the final tournament of the LPGA Tour season, and it has been played since 2011.

History of the Tournament

The Titleholders Championship started in 1937. It was a bit like the Masters Tournament for men, which also began a few years earlier. Both were played in Augusta, Georgia. However, the Titleholders was held at Augusta Country Club, not the famous Augusta National Golf Club next door.

Golfers who had won other amateur and professional events were invited to play. In the early years, most of the players were amateurs (people who play for fun, not for money). There weren't many professional women golfers back then. Most of them worked as golf instructors or at golf clubs.

The Titleholders tournament didn't offer prize money until 1948. That year, they had $600 to give out, and half of it went to the top professional player. The tournament stopped after November 1966. But it came back for one more year in 1972. That year, it was played in May at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Even though the LPGA organization didn't start until 1950, all these Titleholders tournaments are now recognized as major championships.
