Titus Corlățean (born on January 11, 1968) is a well-known Romanian politician and diplomat. He used to be the Minister of Justice and also the Minister of Foreign Affairs for his country. Titus Corlățean is a member of the Social Democratic Party, often called PSD. He was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies, which is like a part of Romania's parliament, in 2004.

Early Life and Education

Titus Corlățean was born in a town called Medgidia. He studied law at the University of Bucharest and finished in 1994. He also got a special certificate from a famous school in Paris, France, called the International Institute of the École nationale d'administration in 1995.

Working as a Diplomat

From 1994 to 2001, Corlățean worked as a diplomat for Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This means he represented his country in dealings with other countries. Later, from 2001 to 2003, he worked for the Prime Minister, Adrian Năstase. He advised the Prime Minister on foreign policy and also helped Romanians living in other countries.

Political Career Highlights

Titus Corlățean joined the PSD political party in 2002. He became a spokesperson for the party after 2004.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

When Romania joined the European Union on January 1, 2007, Corlățean became a Member of the European Parliament. He was officially elected to this role later that year. While in the European Parliament, he worked on the Committee on Legal Affairs and was even a vice-chair. He left this role in 2008 when he was elected back to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies. In 2012, he was elected as a Senator for Bucharest.

Serving as a Minister

In Prime Minister Victor Ponta's government, Titus Corlățean held two important jobs. He was the Justice Minister from May to August 2012. After that, he became the Foreign Minister from August 2012 to November 2014. He stepped down from being Foreign Minister after some issues during the 2014 presidential election. Some people felt there weren't enough places for Romanians living abroad to vote.

Work in the Council of Europe

Besides his work in the Romanian parliament, Corlățean has been part of Romania's group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He served there from 2009 to 2012 and again since 2015. In this Assembly, he has worked on many important committees, including those dealing with legal issues and human rights. He has also been a special reporter on topics like Georgia and the investigation into the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Since 2019, he has been the main reporter for the Assembly on ending the death penalty.

Awards and Recognition

Titus Corlățean has received several honors for his work. In 2004, he was named a Knight of the Order of the Star of Romania. In 2014, he received the Grand Cross of the Order pro merito Melitensi.
