What Does "Tobeatic" Mean?
The name "Tobeatic" comes from the Mi'kmaq language. It means "Place of the Alder." Alders are a type of shrub or small tree often found in wet areas.
Exploring the Tobeatic Landscape
This wilderness area is home to large sections of Acadian forest. The land here is very diverse! You'll find many different types of environments, including:
- Wetlands (swampy or marshy areas)
- Woodlands (forests)
- Scrublands (areas with small shrubs and bushes)
- Barrens (open areas with thin soil and few trees)
The landscape was shaped a long, long time ago by the last glaciation (when huge sheets of ice covered the land). As the glaciers moved and then melted, they left behind interesting features like:
- Glacial barrens
- Giant rocks called erratics
- Small hills called drumlins and hummocks
- Long ridges of sand and gravel called eskers and moraines
- Flat areas of sand and gravel called outwash plains
- Lakes formed in depressions left by melting ice, known as kettle lakes
Tobeatic vs. Kejimkujik National Park
The Tobeatic Wilderness Area is different from the nearby Kejimkujik National Park in a few ways.
- In Tobeatic, some hunting is allowed, and people can lease (rent) land for certain uses.
- The campsites, canoe routes, and portages (places where you carry your canoe between waterways) are not as developed or maintained as they are in Kejimkujik.
However, the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour is working to open some new trail systems. They are also closing down some old hunting camps. Using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is now not allowed within the reserve.
The Tobeatic Wilderness Area and Kejimkujik National Park are both part of the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve. This is a special area recognized by UNESCO for its unique natural and cultural features.
