Tocllaraju is a tall mountain located in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. This range is part of the larger Andes mountains in Peru. Tocllaraju stands about 6,034 meters (19,797 feet) high.

The name Tocllaraju might come from the Quechua language. In Quechua, tuqlla means "trap" and rahu means "snow" or "ice". So, its name could mean "snow-covered trap mountain".

This impressive peak is found in the Ancash Region of Peru. It is also part of the Huascarán National Park. This park is a protected area, helping to keep the natural beauty of the mountains safe. Tocllaraju is located to the northwest of other mountains like Pukaranra and Palcaraju.

How Tall Is Tocllaraju?

The official height of Tocllaraju is listed as 6,034 meters. However, some modern measurements using special technology show slightly different numbers. For example, data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) suggests it might be around 5,950 meters. Another system, TanDEM-X, measured it at 5,928 meters.

This means there's a small debate about its exact height. Still, it's definitely one of the very tall mountains in the Andes!

Understanding Mountain Height

When we talk about a mountain's height, we also look at its "prominence". A mountain's topographic prominence tells us how much it rises above the land around it. It's like measuring how tall it is from its lowest connecting point to a higher peak.

For Tocllaraju, its prominence is 2,757 meters. This shows it stands out quite a lot from the surrounding landscape. Its "parent peak" is Chinchey, which is a higher mountain nearby.

Climbing Tocllaraju

Climbing Tocllaraju is a challenging adventure. The most common way to reach the top is called the Northwest Ridge route. This path is rated as "Alpine D," which means it is considered difficult for climbers.

First Ascent

The first people to successfully climb Tocllaraju used the Northwest Ridge route. These brave climbers were Walther Brecht and Hans Schweizer from Germany. They reached the summit on July 31, 1939.

Other Climbing Routes

There is also another way to climb Tocllaraju called the West Face Direct route. This path is even harder, rated as "Alpine D+." It was first climbed on July 18, 1980.
