Todd's Valley, also called Todd, is a small community in Placer County, California. It is not a city with its own government. This area is found near Todd Creek, about 13 miles (21 km) east-northeast of Auburn. Todd's Valley sits high up, at 2,684 feet (818 meters) above sea level.

A Look Back at Todd's Valley

Todd's Valley got its name from Dr. F. Walton Todd. He opened a store there in 1849. This was during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush. Many people, called forty-niners, came to California hoping to find gold.

Gold Rush Days

Dr. Todd's store was very important for the forty-niners. They needed supplies like flour and tools. Because these items were hard to get, Dr. Todd sold them at very high prices. For example, he sold flour for $2.50 a pound.

The community had its own post office for many years. The Todd Valley post office was open from 1856 to 1884. Later, the Todd post office operated from 1885 to 1901.

Life in the 1880s

In 1882, Todd's Valley was a busy and successful place. It was described as a "charming and prosperous village." About 226 people lived there at that time.

However, the town faced a big challenge. A large fire destroyed most of Todd's Valley on September 25, 1859. But the people worked hard to rebuild it. The community continued to be a center for gold mining into the 1880s.

Todd's Valley Today

Over time, the town became much smaller. By 1922, only 25 people lived there. Today, Todd's Valley is a quiet, semi-rural area. It is located on the edge of Foresthill.
