History of Togiak
Togiak was not always in its current spot. It grew from two older villages called Togiagamute and Togiak Station. These villages were on the east side of Togiak Bay.
Early in the 1900s, it became hard to find wood in winter because of heavy snow. So, people started moving to the west side of the bay. This new place became the Togiak we know today. It first appeared on official records in 1920. The old Togiagamute village is now near Twin Hills. Togiak Station is now an empty place.
Many people moved to the Togiak area after a very bad sickness in 1918-1919. This sickness, called the influenza pandemic, caused many villages to almost disappear. In 1964, Togiak had a big flood. This flood caused some people to move again and start a new community called Twin Hills.
