Exploring Toledo's Past
Toledo has an interesting history. It was not always known by its current name.
How Toledo Got Its Name
This community was first called Benners. A post office opened there in 1898 under the name Benners. Later, in 1910, the name was changed to Toledo. The name "Toledo" came from the city of Toledo, Ohio. The post office in Toledo, Missouri, eventually closed in 1942.
What Remains of the Old Community
Today, not much is left of the original community of Toledo. This is because a large part of the land around it became part of the Mark Twain National Forest. This forest helps protect nature and wildlife in the area.
