Where is Tolmezzo?
Tolmezzo is a town found at the base of Strabut Mountain. It sits between the Tagliamento River and the Bût stream. Nearby is Mount Amariana, which is about 1,906 meters (6,253 feet) tall.
The town of Tolmezzo also includes several smaller areas. These are called frazioni or boroughs. Some of these boroughs are Cadunea, Caneva, Casanova, Fusea, Illegio, and Imponzo.
A Look at Tolmezzo's Past
Tolmezzo was first mentioned in official papers in the late 900s. At that time, it was part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. This was a powerful church state in the region. Some people think the town might have started even earlier. It could have been a very old settlement from before Roman times.
In the time of Ancient Rome, an important Roman road passed through this area. This road connected Italy to what is now Austria.
Changes in Rule
Tolmezzo was a busy trading town with a lively market. It was protected by strong walls with 18 towers. It also had a castle belonging to the Patriarchs. In 1420, the town became part of the Republic of Venice. This was a powerful state in Italy.
Even with this change, Tolmezzo's trade and businesses continued to do well. The town kept its special rights and benefits. In 1797, a treaty called the Treaty of Campo Formio handed Tolmezzo over to the Austrian Empire. After a short time under French rule by Napoleon, it became part of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. This kingdom was controlled by Austria.
Finally, in 1866, Tolmezzo joined the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.
