Tolosa's History
The area that is now Tolosa was first settled before the American Civil War. Some of the very first families to live here were named King and Baker. Because of the Baker family, the community was once known as Baker's Prairie. It's believed that the name "Tolosa" might have come from a Native American group.
A post office was opened in Tolosa in 1880. In 1884, only 25 people lived there, but this number doubled just six years later. At one point, Tolosa had ten businesses and three churches. By 1904, the population grew to 116 people. However, it then dropped to 50 by 1936. After World War II, the population stayed pretty steady, increasing to 58 people from 1988 through 2000.
