Thomas Garrett Cavanagh (born March 24, 1982 – died January 6, 2011) was an American professional ice hockey player. He played as a center and was known for his skill on the ice. Tom played for the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League (AHL) and also made it to the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks.
The San Jose Sharks picked him in the sixth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. After playing four seasons of college hockey at Harvard University, he signed a professional contract with the Sharks.
Tom Cavanagh made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks during the 2007–08 season. He quickly made an impact, getting an assist on his very first shift! The next season, on March 28, 2009, he scored his only NHL goal. It was a cool backhand shot past the Phoenix Coyotes goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov.
Tom Cavanagh's Hockey Journey
Tom Cavanagh went to Phillips Exeter Academy before starting his college hockey career.
He holds a special record at Harvard University. Tom was the first player ever to play in every single game during his time there. He played his 138th straight game in a Harvard jersey during the final game of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. That's a lot of games!
Tom also became the all-time scoring leader for the Worcester Sharks. He earned 138 points in 202 games with the team.
When he made his NHL debut, Tom set another record for the San Jose Sharks. He got an assist just 36 seconds into his first game. This was the quickest point a rookie had ever scored for the franchise! The assist was on a goal by famous player Joe Thornton.
A Difficult Time
Tom Cavanagh passed away on January 6, 2011. He was found in a parking garage in Providence, Rhode Island. It was a very sad loss for the hockey community.
