Tom Edward Hammonds was born on March 27, 1967. He is an American who used to play professional basketball. He also became a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racer. Tom was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He went to Crestview High School in Crestview, Florida.

Tom Hammonds played college basketball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He was a standout player.

College Achievements

  • In 1986, he was named Rookie of the Year for the Atlantic Coast Conference. This award goes to the best new player in the league.
  • After college, in 1989, the Washington Bullets picked him. He was the ninth player chosen in the 1989 NBA draft.

NBA Career

Tom Hammonds played in the NBA for 12 seasons. He played for several teams:

During his NBA career, he scored an average of 5.3 points per game. His best game was on January 29, 1992. He scored 31 points against the New York Knicks while playing for the Bullets.

Playing for Team USA

While he was still in college at Georgia Tech, Tom Hammonds played for the U.S. national team. In 1986, his team won the gold medal at the 1986 FIBA World Championship. This was a big achievement for him and his country.

After his basketball career, Tom Hammonds found a new passion: drag racing.

Starting in Drag Racing

While playing for the Denver Nuggets, Tom started getting involved in drag racing. He became a professional drag racer. In 1996, he qualified for the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals. This is a major drag racing event. He raced against Kurt Johnson but did not win that time.

Owning a Race Team

Tom Hammonds now owns his own NHRA team. He has been racing in the NHRA's Pro Stock class since 1996. This means he races special cars designed for speed.

Other Ventures

Tom Hammonds also opened a car dealership. It is located in Darlington, South Carolina.
