Thomas Roy Skerritt (born August 25, 1933) is an American actor and director. He has appeared in over 170 movies and TV shows since 1962.
He became well-known early in his career with the movie M*A*S*H. He then starred in other famous films like Alien, Top Gun, and A River Runs Through It.
On television, Skerritt played Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the family drama Picket Fences from 1992 to 1996. For this role, he won an Emmy Award. He was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. He also had a recurring role on the TV show Cheers.
Skerritt has won several awards, including a Saturn Award. In 2022, he received the Mary Pickford Award for his great contributions to entertainment.

Early Life and Military Service
Tom Skerritt was born in Detroit, Michigan. His mother, Helen, was a homemaker, and his father, Roy Skerritt, was a businessman. He is the youngest of three children.
After graduating from Mackenzie High School in 1951, Skerritt went to Wayne State University and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Right after high school, Skerritt joined the United States Air Force. He served for four years as a classifications specialist. He spent most of his time at Bergstrom Field in Austin, Texas.
Acting Career
Skerritt's first movie was War Hunt, released in 1962. He appeared in many important films. These include M*A*S*H (1970) and Harold and Maude (1971).
He also starred as Captain Dallas in the science fiction horror film Alien (1979). Later, he played Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in the hit movie Top Gun (1986). In 1992, he was in the acclaimed film A River Runs Through It. He played a minister and father who loved fly-fishing.
On television, Skerritt had many guest roles. He appeared in shows like My Favorite Martian (1963) and Bonanza (1964). He also played Mark Twain in an episode of Death Valley Days in 1968.
From 1992 to 1996, Skerritt starred as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS series Picket Fences. This role earned him an Emmy Award. He also appeared in Homeland Security and The Grid.
He played William Walker in Brothers & Sisters. He appeared in the first episode and in several flashback scenes. He also lent his voice to the video game Gun (2005).
In 2012, Skerritt played the main role in the Pacific Northwest Ballet's show Don Quixote. In 2014, he worked again with his Picket Fences co-star, Lauren Holly, in the movie Field of Lost Shoes. He also reunited with his Alien co-star Harry Dean Stanton in the film Lucky (2017).
Personal Life
Tom Skerritt is the founder and chairman of Heyou Media. This is a digital media company based in Seattle.
He has been married three times and has five children. He was married to Charlotte Shanks from 1957 to 1972, and they had three children. He was then married to Sue Oran from 1977 to 1992, and they had one son. Since 1996, he has been married to Julie Tokashiki, and they have one daughter.
